What Are Viscoelastics?
Viscoelastics, or ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVD), are high-viscosity materials used during eye surgery — especially cataract surgery — to maintain the anterior chamber, protect corneal tissue, and let the surgeon work smoothly. Choosing the right viscoelastic affects the safety and outcome of surgery.
Types of Viscoelastics
Japan Enterprise imports and distributes several types of viscoelastic to suit every surgical technique.
Cohesive (Sodium Hyaluronate)
A viscoelastic whose molecules bind well, maintaining the anterior chamber and easy to remove afterward, reducing pressure-spike risk.
Dispersive
A viscoelastic that coats and especially protects the corneal endothelium and is not easily washed away during phaco.
HPMC
A cost-effective, safe and widely used viscoelastic.
How to Choose a Viscoelastic
The choice depends on the technique and surgeon's judgment; many use the soft-shell technique combining both types. What matters is high clarity, sterility, and certification.
